Spicing up your lesson plans with fun activities can make learning much more fun. A game is a great way to increase participation within a lesson and inside your classroom.

Even though the learning processes may be the same, a worksheet presented to a student as a game is received differently by the student compared to a typical worksheet.

Who knows, part of this thinking shift could be due to the increased excitement of the teacher when passing out the game sheet, versus the simple worksheet.

Perception is everything when it comes to learning and productivity!

The goal as a teacher is to make sure the student completes the learning activity and retains the information. When you turn the activity into a game, the percentage of retention is increased.

How to play the Lizard Learning Fun Scrabble Spelling game

  1. Start by downloading and printing the sheets for each student you would like to participate in the activity.
  2. Write words to match their skill level in the left-hand column with the letters given at the top of the page.
  3. Once each student has their sheet, they must match the letters in each word and write the number that correlates with the middle column’s letter.
  4. Continue to find the accurate numbers and place a plus sign in between each one.
  5. Once each student has built their equation, ask them to total the numbers of the equation in the middle column and write the total in the right-hand column.
  6. Have them share their results and learn from their mistakes.

Options for Increased Difficulty

  • Have the students spell their own words.
  • Challenge your students to use high numbered letters when making their words to get higher word values. (Hint: challenge them to see who could get the highest or lowest word value)
  • Challenge your student to see who can get the accurate word values the fastest from the words you have written in the spelling word column.

Extensions Ideas for this Activity

  • Students create words of the week where they complete this activity for each weekly word
  • Ask your student to write the different homophones, for example, the word THERE. Students see what each word value totals.

The Fun Scrabble Spelling activity is accessible from many different learning levels and is so fun, your students may not know they are learning. In addition, increasing participation in your classroom increases retention because students are thinking for themselves and voicing their answers. This allows the opportunity for correction or for that student to help another student correct their mistake.

This activity also intertwines literacy learning with numeracy, so it is challenging for your students to implement their knowledge, in order to report the word value in the correct column accurately.

Use this fun activity repeatedly in different ways with the options for an increased difficulty to have students continue having fun while learning.
