Silly Spelling Sentences is an activity sheet that teachers can use to help students learn their spelling in a fun light-hearted way. It taps into students’ creativity by building hilarious mental images of new words they will remember better in the future.
All teachers need to do is, print the sheet and provide students with their list of spelling words. Students must then look up the definition of each spelling word and think of a way to use it within a silly sentence. Just one rule, although the sentences are silly, the use of the word must be in the correct context or a play on words. That is why it is important to encourage students to fully explore the meaning of the words before they start creating their laugh-out-loud sentences.

Peer Assessment is a great way to embed and extend learning. And, in this activity, students will enjoy reading the silly sentences their classmates have come up with.
???? Ask students to switch papers and provide them with the marking criteria. The criteria could include; have the spelling words been spelt correctly, have they punctuated their sentences correctly using full-stops, capital letters etc.
When students are learning to give feedback, it is easy for them to spot the mistakes. So, to keep it positive, ask your students to choose their favourite sentence. Which one made them laugh the most? You could call this the LOL-factor.
???? Sometimes, education can be all too serious, and we need reminding that learning should be fun. So, similar to the popular WOW walls, where teachers display amazing pieces of work, why not also create a LOL wall.
This could be a space in your classroom where students can go to Laugh-Out-Loud. You could display their silly sentences here along with a funny picture or meme for the week. Perhaps a funny joke relating to a learning topic. Or anything that you think might tickle their fancy. It’s a great way to lighten the mood and a talk-topic stimulant.
