Many of us haven’t looked at a colouring book since we were a child, but now many are taking a trip down memory lane and picking up their pencils again. Colouring books for adults don’t look like the books you remember from your childhood though. The designs are generally more intricate, and the books themselves are of a higher quality than those for kids.
The more complicated designs are not only because they are marketed at adults though. Intricate designs require more concentrations than simple designs.
The various decisions that go into the colouring process (choosing colours and picking your next step) require just enough brain power to occupy your brain without overdoing it. This level of concentration helps to banish negative thoughts and can even help some people reach a meditative state. By focusing on complex designs, we are able to relax and block out some of the stressful thoughts that were circling our brains. Colouring in can then become a focus building exercise that you add to your mindfulness practice by anchoring yourself in the present using the action of colouring in.
Colouring in can also be a great way to take a break from technology. You can take some time to unplug from your various technological device and create something for yourself. Colouring has the added bonus of being a tech-free pastime that doesn’t require any particular skill or fancy equipment. You don’t have to be an artist to create something beautiful. The familiar and predictable nature of colouring can also prove soothing for some. It is a low stakes pastime that is nonetheless satisfying and enjoyable.
Most importantly, when we colour it reminds us of the joy and simplicity of childhood. It allows us to take a break from our adult lives and take pleasure in creativity. For those with kids, it can even be a great bonding activity as you take the time to sit side by side with your kids and colour.
